SAHRR finished

I did the quilting with my walking foot and it is all a combination of stitch in the ditch and edge stitching.  I used a lavender thread.  The backing is a piece of fabric that has been in my stash.  The colors match up pretty well.  Had to add a piece to the edge of it to make it large enough.  I haven't put the quilt through the wash yet.

I appreciated this quilt along.  I was wanting to do something with this bag of scraps that included the center (squares were sewn together).  So the SAHRR gave me the inspiration and patterns to get started and keep going.

It's my party and I will whine if I want to..........

Saturday was National Quilt Day so I got out 2 projects that I started back in 2011 and 2012.  On Saturday I got Orca Bay all assembled.  On Sunday I got Roll Roll Cotton Bowl all assembled.  On Monday I sandwiched RRCB and started quilting it.

I had Orca Bay blocks sewn together and all the pieces made (previously) so I had to sew the border pieces together and sew the borders to the quilt top.  Sounds easy enough.  LOL.

Roll Roll Cotton bowl x-blocks were made and the string blocks were made except for sewing them into squares.  I had lost the pattern so I didn't have enough blocks for the entire quilt.  I used what I had and made this smaller quilt and I like the size of it.  I used all the extra red & white hst's that I made previously and sewed them around the quilt for a border.  Like I said, no pattern meant no final border pattern.  I like this look and when I get done quilting it I will use that same shade of red for binding.  No fancy quilting designs.  Just straight lines to hold it all securely together.    Orca Bay is too large for me to struggle with on my machine so I will have a friend quilt it on her frame and long arm machine.

SAHRR round 6

I sewed scraps onto 4 inch squares of paper then trimmed to 3.5".   These are more of a wonky honky tonk log cabins.  Not sure if I will make more of them.  I am waiting to see what the last round will be before deciding how they will be incorporated.

SAHRR stars round

The fun has continued this week.  I like the wonky stars.  I placed them on the sides and used some extra 4 patches in between them plus some squares or strips, whatever it took to make the rows fit with the existing previous rounds I have completed.

Plus we had some excitement this past week with an ice storm and power outages.  No snow.  Just ice rain and rain that froze when it hit the ground.  Lots of trees and/or branches down and power lines down.  My heart goes out to other areas of the country suffering much worse.

SAHRR checkerboard round

I decided to put 4-patch blocks at the top and bottom instead of all the way around.

When I auditioned blocks on the sides also,  it seemed like too much business.

But who knows?  I may change my mind and add them onto the sides too.  It is a wait and see.

Flying Geese social distancing.

SAHRR flying geese is Round 3.      My geese are stack and slash improv style.  I stacked 4 to 6 pieces of fabric, cut them, and then rearranged the pieces.   I made the rows in different sizes.  Just going with the flow as I went along.

At first I drew a bit of paper piecing pattern as was suggested by Anja but I wasn't sure I wanted to take a chance on using these scraps for the paper piecing since I am limited on them.  So I will use some other scraps to practice that on.
Instead I stacked up some rectangles and cut them and arranged them.

Then I had to sort of trim them up and make them fit.  A few came up a bit short so I added onto them, with contrast fabric.  Decided to use some extra pieces of fabric between them so I didn't have to make so many.  lol.  Also, I  considered putting a row of geese on one side going down instead of up.  Didn't want to spend time deciding so I just did it like this and said what does it really matter?  Get this thing done.  Have fun.  Don't stress.

Here is my attempt to draw paper pieced geese.  I'll try sewing it one of these days.

SAHRR

This is a Stay At Home Round Robin.  It encourages us to use and orphan block so it isn't exactly like starting a whole new project.  I have this orphan block (not a perfect block, but I like it) and this bag of scraps.  This was left overs that someone else didn't want anymore.  I love the colors of the fabrics.

The block is made of 2" squares.  It is 18.5" x 19.5".   A little lopsided and tough to square up without cutting too much off two of the sides.  So I trimmed it as best I could and sewed strips around the block and got it squared up pretty good by the frame.  The sashing frame.   I sort of cheated on the piano key border.  A few cuts of fabrics and added some stripes to make the length.  Added in 6 of the Plus Blocks.  Those are 3" blocks.  So far I am enjoying this and I'm liking the look of it.

The qal is offered on the blog called Quilting Gail.  https://quiltinggail.com/2021/01/01/sahrr-pronounced-stay-at-home-round-robin/

You can see all the rules and the other blogs that are giving a pattern each week for the rows.

The orphan block, trying to be squared up.

The next picture shows the bag of scraps.  There are more than it looks because they are stacked up.

The third picture shows that I have completed the steps given so far.  I can't wait for the next step.

Finally finished this UFO (Bright Sky from Blossom Hearts Quilt blog)

EDIT:   today I was looking for something in my files and discovered that this quilt pattern is called Bright Sky and was made by Blossom Hearts Quilts in 2014.   So it was longer ago than I was remembering.

Two or three years ago I participated in this qal from someone's blog.  When I figure out who's it is I will edit this post and give them credit for the pattern.  I liked it because the quilt is one big block.  But then I put it aside.  Lately I have been trying to finish things instead of starting more.  (famous last words)  But a relative spotted this top and really loved it so I wanted to get it quilted and give it to her.  She even helped me get it sandwiched.  Even though she is only 9 years old.  Extra hands are really helpful with that part of making a quilt.  Sandwiching is my least favorite part of it.

I used a light coat of spray glue on the backing and then secured it all with safety pins.  Quilted it with some modern theme lines.  The 9-year-old chose the backing.

Scrappy Stripes quilt for Persimon Dreams July challenge

For several years I have been wanting to use stripe fabrics in a quilt so the scrappy challenge for July at Persimon Dreams quilts got me motivated to dig out the stripes.  I had saved an idea for stripes that I saw on a blog probably 16 years ago.  I had only printed 2 pages in order to not use up much printer ink.  Unfortunately, I do not remember the name of the blog, and neither page has any names on them.   Otherwise, I would be happy to give that information.  They used 6-inch squares.  I started out making blocks using 4 squares in each block that are 3.5", each square so that I could use up some of the smaller pieces of fabric.  Then I used 6" squares for the rest of the blocks.  I put the smaller blocks in two rows and put a striped strip between those and the six-inch blocks because the seams weren't lining up.  The strips made for a more pleasing transition between the block sizes.  Here is the final outcome.

Front of quilt and the back.
The quilt is 58"x68"

Started out with these:

First some linear quilting.  And then some cross hatch lines.

Here are a few more progress pictures. ...
